Creating Space: The Dark Energy and The Empty Spaces …..

Psalm 139: 11-12. ” If I say, “Surely the darkness will overwhelm me, And the light around me will be night. Even the darkness is not dark to You, And the night is as bright as the day. Darkness and light are alike to You” WOW, what a statement!

Recently, I went to hear Rob Bell and he talked a lot about the origin of our Universe and it’s implications concerning our own heart, passions, and purpose. He brought up the matter of our Universe being made up of more “dark energy, matter” than “normal matter”. He spoke about how everything is spiritual and when we understand the nature of things in the Natural, the spiritual can also be readily seen. He spoke about how the Universe cannot ignore or forget it’s past and neither can we, BUT, we can expand beyond it. I love that idea!  A friend of mine elaborated further by sending me some scientific data on how dark energy expands into space. Let me bring home some fun little truths about space. Here is a quote from an article I read:

“One explanation for dark energy is that it is a property of space. Albert Einstein was the first person to realize that empty space is not nothing. Space has amazing properties, many of which are just beginning to be understood. The first property that Einstein discovered is that it is possible for more space to come into existence. Then one version of Einstein’s gravity theory, the version that contains a cosmological constant, makes a second prediction: “empty space” can possess its own energy. Because this energy is a property of space itself, it would not be diluted as space expands. As more space comes into existence, more of this energy-of-space would appear. As a result, this form of energy would cause the Universe to expand faster and faster. Unfortunately, no one understands why the cosmological constant should even be there, much less why it would have exactly the right value to cause the observed acceleration of the Universe.”

This is awesome! In Yoga we speak so much about “creating space” in our bodies, our breath, our lives, etc. Space is really important. So often, when there is “space”, let’s say a “lull” in a conversation, a relationship, or something else that we often aren’t very comfortable with, we want to stop the awkwardness. So often, we don’t allow for the silence of life, just being present to the moment where nothing seems to be happening around us. We seek to fill up the space, not understanding that when we embrace it and flow with it, it actually expands us. Paul the Apostle spoke of such a thing. He said, ” As in the natural, so in the spiritual.” He was saying that how this Universe goes, so goes what God is doing. We can understand God by observing the stuff of Science. As a person who loves using the brain that God gave me, I thrive on these little bits of scientific information. It remind me that everything matters that is going on and that I’m not just some insignificant being hanging out until my time is over. And Neither are you! There’s a purpose in our darkness, our space, our energy. If the Universe is expanding quicker today than it did billions of ears ago, then it really does seem that time is moving faster than it use to. How often do we say, ” Time is going by so fast!?” Because it is! And during that process, creation keeps expanding as well. So does our heart. We get to choose how they will expand. Will the dark energy ruin us or make us more purposeful about our lives?

So, what about when “dark energy” exposes itself in our lives? How can it be something good for us? How can we allow it to make the “clearing” and the space for more expansion naturally as well as spiritually? If nothing is really just “empty space” but actually a space where that emptiness process is creating more energy, how do we give ourselves to it? Are the dark times purposeful in our lives? Is there no meaning unless we “create” it?

I think the dark times are purposeful and that purpose is to make inquiry’s about what’s going on in our lives. It’s time to ask some questions about what our beliefs are about meaning and purpose. And isn’t this what happens to most people? They ask, ” WHY?”. Though that question is “normal”, it doesn’t mean it’s useful. The reason I say this is because the “why” question doesn’t often contain a reason that is helpful in many cases. Rather, it can come up with an old reason that really doesn’t serve us beneficially. It also creates more unanswerable questions or beliefs such as , ” Am I good enough?” I’m not good enough”. It can create shame and guilt rather than purposeful movement.

I like the idea that empty space creates more space and that dark matter propels expansion. This means that in a spiritual sense, I can choose how to expand and propel myself by the darker matters of my life. I can choose to exert energy by staying “stuck” where I am or be propelled forward with bitterness and resentment or love and grace. THIS is where “my” little Universe becomes involved more proactively. I don’t have to leave it up for random chances to happen. I can CHOOSE my destiny so to speak ,from taking a deeper perspective on my empty spaces and my darker matters. What I do with this energy will determine the force and outcome of the expansion of my heart and my life. I’ve given my heart and my life to love and so that will always be the motive behind whatever I choose. With this in mind, I don’t have to stay stuck forever. If these “empty spaces” and “dark energy” moments actually propel the Universe to expand more quickly, why can’t they do that for me as well?
Maybe it’s because the Universe doesn’t fight with reality and I do. If I can just “wait” and allow this space to create it’s OWN energy directed by love, then I can experience this “cosmological constant” of always having love produce more of itself.
Now THAT’s what I’m talkin’ about!

As the article said,  “Unfortunately, no one understands why the cosmological constant should even be there, much less why it would have exactly the right value to cause the observed acceleration of the Universe.” This statement qualifies for ME that though there is no logical reason for God and Spirit to exist in the “evolutionary process”, they indeed DO exist. There is a purpose and a reason for all that matters. I don’t need to extend tons of energy trying to figure out the why’s and the what’s of this, I just need to allow it to expand my heart and propel me quicker toward that purpose and reason. After all, time goes by so quickly, I don’t have any to waste.
